Server Extensions

Some components in FrontPage require that your server has FrontPage Extensions installed. You will need to check with your hosting service to see whether or not they have FrontPage Extensions. If they don't, you can still use FrontPage and FrontPage Web Templates to build your site, but you may not be able to use all the features of FrontPage in your web site.

Servers may have:

  • No FrontPage Extensions
  • FrontPage 98 Extensions (few do, so we don't discuss it here)
  • FrontPage 2000 Extensions
  • FrontPage 2002 Extensions
  • FrontPage 2002 Extensions with SharePoint Team Services (STS)
  • Windows SharePoint Services (WSS)

Below is a list of features that we've compiled from various sources.

What does this mean for me?

If you are using our products, here's a quick summary of what this means for you if:

  • You don't have FP extensions on your servers.
    • You may use the template and/or theme and publish using FTP. You will most likely be able to use most of the features of the template, apart from any...
    • Search forms, submit forms, or other types of forms built to use the FrontPage webbot (You can create your own form scripts and use them)
    • Hit Counters, Reports, and other things that involve "logging" information on the server
    • You won't be able to publish "subwebs"
    • See below for a tip on how to restrict your FrontPage to features that will work for you.
  • You have FP2000 extensions on your servers.
    • The FrontPage 2002-specific "text style" link bars will show up as FP2000 Theme or Text link bars
    • You'll be able to use all FP2000 features in your web site
    • You'll be able to publish to subwebs
    • You'll be able to use the forms, hit counters, etc.
  • You have FP2002 extensions on your servers.
    • You'll be able to do almost everything that FP2000 extensions allow you to do.
    • You'll be able to use the FP2002-specific "text style" link bars
    • You'll be able to use all the FP2002 features, specifically the Top 10 lists, Custom Link Bars, and more.

Tip for using FP if your server doesn't have server extensions

For FP2002: Open your web site. Go to Tools > Page Options, and click the Compatibility tab. Uncheck the box that says "enabled with Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions." This will grey out the options in FrontPage that you cannot use without FP Server Extensions.

For FP2003: Open your web site. Go to Tools > Page Options, and click the Authoring tab. Check or uncheck the boxes under "FrontPage and SharePoint technologies." This will grey out the options in FrontPage that you cannot use.
